Abrazo Family Medicine Residency Curriculum

The following curriculum overview represents what is required of our residents; it is not all-inclusive nor does it list all academic performance measures or graduation standards. Abrazo Family Medicine Residency Program reserves the right to temporarily restructure resident duties for those with acute illness, injury, or other circumstances of a temporary nature.

Our comprehensive residency program is three years in length. Resident physicians will be prepared with extensive medical knowledge and patient care experiences allowing a high level of competence and confidence. Training in and achievement of the six ACGME competencies will extend to practice opportunities and continued learning in new areas of practice. We challenge you to reach new confidence levels across the wide spectrum of care in the areas listed below.

  • Medicine skills: Provide full-spectrum medical care for patients in multiple settings; including outpatient, inpatient, and long-term care.
  • Obstetrics: Deliver babies and care for them, assist in/perform cesarean sections, and perform ultrasound exams.
  • Pediatrics: Care for newborns and toddlers, well and sick children and provide guidance for adolescents.
  • Orthopedics: Interpret X-rays, evaluate and set fractures, and manage patients until full function is restored.
  • Psychosocial training: Provide counseling and intervene with patients with anxiety and  mood disorders, substance abuse, ADHD, and other psychiatric conditions across the lifespan.

  • Sports medicine: Make specific injury-related diagnoses, and plan appropriate rehabilitation.
  • Practice Management and Leadership: Gain expertise in documenting, billing and coding patient records, how to be a medical director of a family medicine clinic, put financial controls in place, interpret reports and lead innovation.
  • Community-oriented practice: Interpret practice specific data, develop programs and services, improve the quality of care, and accurately document progress.
  • Evidence-based Medicine: Stay up-to-date on current trends and implement best practices so patients receive proven methods of care.
  • Systems-based practice: Lead, measure and improve quality, implement system innovations, and document performance.
